Course description
A thorough grounding in foundational technical skills is necessary for the success of digital humanities projects and research. There is a range of impressive digital humanities activities on the UVic campus; however, there is a lack of skills training opportunities to support the research, project, and professionalization interests of the UVic digital humanities and digital humanities-aligned community. Although the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI) provides invaluable annual training every June, sustained training throughout the academic year is necessary. The Electronic Textual Cultures Lab is partnering with the UVic Libraries to respond to this desire for further digital humanities skills training. Of note, this course is available for transfer credit for those enrolled in the DH Graduate Certificate.

This course will provide an introductory, hands-on survey of digital humanities skills. From a technical standpoint, it will include the teaching and learning of:

  • coding & encoding (HTML, CSS, TEI, XML)
  • customization (Javascript)
  • content management systems & software frameworks (Drupal, WordPress, & Omeka)

From a project development standpoint, it will include the teaching and learning of:

  • project management
  • archival and library encoding
  • preservation and standards

Objectives

  • to provide more training opportunities to established and incoming members of the UVic DH and DH-aligned community (including librarians, archivists, faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, practitioners, and others) during the academic year that may not be available through standard channels at this time.
  • to develop the skills of members of the UVic DH and DH-aligned community so they are able to successfully enact their projects and endeavours, as well as to share those skills with their colleagues.
  • to encourage collegiality and cross-department collaboration via shared training experiences and through facilitating a community of practice.

Please note that space in this course is limited to 12, and is available to those who are officially affiliated with the University of Victoria (including undergraduate or graduate students, staff, faculty, librarians, archivists, administrators, etc). Attendance is expected at every session, and an administrative fee of $25 is required.
