This post is part of the Meet the ETCL Team series, which introduces the wonderful people who work in the lab and who have worked with us in the past.

Franco Guglielmoni is a Mitacs Franco at Niagara Falls in Goldstream, Victoria - March 28, 2026.Globalink research intern from Brazil. He joined the lab in January 2026 and will continue his work through the end of May. His first contact with the lab was in April 2025, when Ray and Graham visited PUCRS’ LabHD in Porto Alegre, Brazil, for the First Digital Humanities Journey and launched the Portuguese interface of the HSS Commons. Since then, LabHD and ETCL developed a collaborative work in which Franco is actively contributing.

The Sea Horizon in Guarda do Embaú, Santa Catarina state - May 2024At ETCL, Franco is translating articles and papers from English to Portuguese and writing annotations centered around the perspectives of Global South over AI and education—and taking pictures of George, the peacock. At LabHD, Franco is involved with mapping Japanese literature translated and published in Brazil, also helping with other different projects and day-to-day tasks.

Franco is currently an undergrad in Creative Writing and is developing his thesis about latin-america magical realism. Between classes and work, other projects include Franco’s shy but productive creative process as a fiction writer, with three major projects in development: a police-thriller novel; a magical realism short story collection; and an urban fantasy graphic-novel (with a lot more stored in his imagination).

Being a writer, Franco loves books, and his favorites are: the saga A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin; Jules Verne’s works, especially Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea; the non-fiction Into the Wild; Michael Crichton’s Jurassic duology; Stephen King’s Joyland; and the singular The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Franco is also very passionate about movies and films (any kind, any genre, any period), but his all-time favourite is Jurassic Park.

Franco’s Franco's cat Lizzie - 2017favourite hobby is playing tabletop role-playing games (RPGs) with his close friends. For cozy indoors: single-player video games (The Last of Us, Firewatch, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 being his favorites), reading, and collecting Batman comics. For outdoor adventures: hiking in windy weather, coffee hopping, swimming, and, more recently, practicing surfing. Both for work and personal life, Franco couldn’t exist without his emotional-support music app injecting music into his brain. He also loves pizza and cats.
