This post is part of the Meet the ETCL Team series, which introduces the wonderful people who work in the lab and who have worked with us in the past.

Thomas is a Mitacs Globalink research intern from Cornwall, Great Britain. He joined the lab in May 2025 and will continue his work through the end of July. His primary project involves creating an environmental scan of open scholarship in relation to generative AI, with a particular focus on relevant policy considerations.

As a current undergraduate student of History and Ancient History at the University of Exeter, Thomas is interested in how the ideas of ancient and medieval scholars of rhetoric and history still matter today. He sees a strong connection between the ETCL’s work on academic freedom and the challenges of preserving texts, which is well illustrated by Procopius’ Secret History.

Thomas also serves as the Senior Chairman of the University of Exeter Debating Society, where he organizes and moderates the society’s show debates. These events are dedicated to promoting free speech and open dialogue, and his role includes inviting and hosting a diverse range of speakers—from Lords and Ladies to celebrities, prominent activists, and subject-matter experts across various fields.

During his stay in Victoria, Thomas is enjoying exploring the unique natural beauty of Victoria and surrounding area. He makes the most of the region’s mountains, forests, and coastal landscapes—often using long travel times through these scenic areas as opportunities to catch up on reading.
