Open Knowledge Residency (one-week intensive program between May-July 2019)
Electronic Textual Cultures Lab (ETCL; etcl.uvic.ca; @ETCLatUVic)
The Open Knowledge Residency fellowship for graduate (MA and PhD) students takes place over the course of the summer, sponsored by UVic’s Electronic Textual Cultures Lab (ETCL) and Digital Scholarship Commons. During this one-week intensive program, plus related training opportunities (a bootstrap session on 9 April, and courses at the Digital Humanities Summer Institute), resident fellows carry out research related to their thesis or dissertation work, with space and consultation provided, and contribute their topic knowledge to an open, public venue (e.g., Wikipedia, OA journal, UVicSpace, and others).
The residency fellowship is an opportunity for participants to develop a specific aspect of their MA or PhD work in an intensive setting. Participants are encouraged to set writing / development goals, foster professional work habits, and meet and strategize with ETCL team members. For those just embarking on their graduate work, this opportunity can provide a space to carry out initial research to serve as a foundation for future work. Participants will also be asked to consider and plan how to make an aspect of their work more openly accessible by the end of the fellowship.
Expectations for Open Knowledge Resident fellows:
- have basic facility in the area of proposed work and technologies pertinent to the proposal;
- are self-directed and have experience working toward defined goals;
- participate on-campus, in the ETCL, 9am–5pm, for one full week;
- are able to work successfully in a team environment;
- are able to make a full week commitment to this practicum.
The Open Knowledge Residency is based in the ETCL, an interdisciplinary research organization at UVic.
Applications should consist of [1] a cover letter that proposes work for the practicum and outcomes, [2] a CV, and [3] the names and contact information of two people who can speak to your competencies in the area. Please send them electronically to <openknowledgepracticum@gmail.com>.
Applications are due on a rolling basis:
For residencies in June, applications are due May 15
For residencies in July, applications are due June 15
Please indicate in your cover letter if you would like to be considered for an honorarium related to the fellowship. Honorariums for the Open Knowledge Residency comprise free registration for up to two courses in the Digital Humanities Summer Institute.
